DECIDE AND COMMIT

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” At one point or another, I am sure we have all asked or answered this question. From elementary to high school, my answers always varied, but during my collegiate years, it dawned on me that this is that time.

Choosing a career in the creative field was not a decision I made lightly. When envisioning my future self, I always pictured a corporate woman. There was security with that trek, and in my mind, security provides freedom. Freedom to build the life I desired without fear of how I was going to do it all. Pursuing a career as a writer does not offer that once imagined security. I have my worries and concerns, but I decided to trust myself and my ability to succeed where I am called.

However, making the decision is only the first part of the equation. After the decision comes commitment, so what does that look like?

Commitment requires four main things:

  1. Time
  2. Consistency
  3. Tunnel vision
  4. Heart

Where we spend our time is a clear reflection of our priorities. It also shows us how serious we are about achieving the things we set out to do. To reap the benefits of our time, we must remain consistent. For example, if we complete a great workout on Monday and decide that’s it for the rest of the week, will we see any results? No! And why would we? We should carry this mindset with all our endeavors.

Tunnel vision keeps us focused. The skills we develop tend to be transferable across many fields, and I love that. It reaffirms that we are never limited to one thing, but it’s essential not to have our hands in too many pots. I remember attending a writing workshop years ago, and one of the panelists said, “if you keep your focus on plan B, you will never reach plan A.” I couldn’t agree more! The “if it doesn’t work out what will you do?” mindset can be useful to keep perspective, but anything more is a distraction.

Lastly, having heart is crucial. Enough rejection emails or lack of growth in a business can prompt discouragement and make you question if you’re on the right path. I found it helpful to look at different success stories. One blogger, I follow even gave the suggestion to watch failed Shark Tank pitches to illuminate the fact that as long as you are willing to persevere, it doesn’t matter how many rejections you receive.

When I think about the journey of becoming a successful writer, it feels overwhelming. There are so many talented writers out there, and the reality is that some of us may not get that book deal or career we sought after. However, when I decided on this path, I knew what came along with, and now it’s time to hustle! Stay committed! Success is not for the weak-minded.

  4. Love this! The fact of the matter is we get stuck when the path becomes hard and tend to navigate towards the safe route. Hence why those who take the biggest amount of risk are usually rewarded the most.

    1. One thing that resonated with me is the idea that what you spend your time doing tells a lot about your priorities. Because of COVID-19 we are all at home way more than usual. What are we spending our extra time doing? If we stop and reflect, we’ll see the things that really matter to us! I really enjoyed reading this! Very thought provoking.

    1. Tunnel vision is a interesting point; it can be scary to hunker down to one goal and commit to it but it’s sometimes necessary to achieve greatness in a particular field.
